2018 at Walt Disney World was highlighted by the opening of Toy Story Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Numerous problems became a symbol of Disney's new corner-cutting style that would come to define this new era for many fans.
Welcome to Timekeeping. This show will attempt to chronicle year by year changes to the Walt Disney World Resort. From the excitement of a new ride opening, to the minutiae of a store changing names. Join us as we celebrate 50 years of the Vacation Kingdom of the World.
The Magic Kingdom got rid of the talking Mickey Mouse character on Main Street U.S.A. Do you remember the Mad Tea Party looking like a dance club? Or Space Mountain operating in total darkness? Move It! Shake It! Dance & Play It! Street Party ended. Pirates of the Caribbean came back from refurbishment, but this time, the redhead was running the show. Club 33 locations started opening at multiple Walt Disney World parks, including Magic Kingdom, EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Do you remember when the Maleficent dragon float caught fire? That was in 2018 too. And who could forget the Instagram wall at the Magic Kingdom? Exiting Space Mountain became a little bit more grueling, with the removal of the speed ramp. TRON Lightcycle Run construction began (and still continues).
EPCOT International Festival of the Arts went full-time. There were a number of changes to The American Adventure, including updated show and projection technology.
Toy Story Land opened with 2 new rides, very little shade and several notable problems.
The Pandora Utility Suit meet and greet was added to Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Rivers of Light had their live Cast Members cut from the show.
Maria & Enzo’s and the Hideaway bar opened at Disney Springs, along with several other restaurants and shops. A new bypass ramp opened near TTC, changing traffic near the Magic Kingdom forever.
Also in 2018, Disney World Resort Hotels started charging for parking. Foot Golf made its debut at Oak Trail. Monorails started to really show their age, with several notable unplanned incidents. There were also a number of other changes at the resorts, and much more.
