Activists urge boycott of Disney's 'Mulan' after links with Communist China

  • Disney is under fire for filming their latest film ‘Mulan’ in Xinjiang, the region where the Chinese Communist Party is accused of holding over 1 million Uighurs in concentration camps. Fans have condemned the company for ignoring human rights abuses occurring in the region in China against the Muslim population.
Disney is remaking the classic cartoon which tells the story of a woman who disguises herself as a man to fight in the place of her father in China’s imperial army. The American film company credited several Chinese government entities in Xinjiang at the end of the film, including a security agency which is involved in running so-called ‘reeducation camps’.
Leaked documents, interviews with survivors and satellite images appear to show the Chinses Communist Party imprisoning the Muslim minority, and allegedly torturing, sterilising and harvesting organs from the Uighurs. China responds to these claims by saying they are reeducation camps and aimed at curbing terrorism. Footage has also emerged from Xinjiang which appears to show people in jumpsuits being forced onto trains and transported to special sites. Human rights campaigners have urged viewers to boycott Disney, with the company refusing to comment on the controversy.
